What “default” means
If you want a packaged US vacation search and you do not already live in Expedia or Travelocity, start on Orbitz. It does not mean Orbitz wins a mystery-shop we did not run. It does not mean Expedia is a trap. It means this lander has one default so a traveler is not offered five winners.
The questions before a click
1. Is this a package or a tour?
Orbitz is an online travel agency. A package is usually air and/or hotel and/or car in one cart. It is not, by default, a guided motorcoach, a park ranger, or a lock-off villa. If a listing is an escorted tour or a cruise, that is a different contract — read it as that, not as “Orbitz magic.”
2. Do I need a third account?
Usually no. Expedia Group brands have overlapping inventory and, in many eras, overlapping rewards. If you already have Expedia, Trip Bundle is the dedicated lander. If you already have Travelocity, Family Trip. Opening Orbitz “just in case” is optional, not a methodology.
3. Can the week move?
If yes, do not let a package prepaid-ify a hotel you still needed to cancel. Park gateways and weather-sensitive weeks belong on named cancellable rooms (Park Stay / Hotels.com) more often than they belong in a bundle.
Sources we trust first
- The live Orbitz (or Expedia, or Travelocity) package rules at checkout.
- Expedia Group public product behavior: sibling brands, not independent hotel companies.
- Park Week hubs and National Park Service / Recreation.gov when the package is pretending to be a park week.
- Typical airport geography: one useful airport, not a stacked connection that only exists to make a tile cheaper.
- Rewards: we name that programs have changed (including One Key in some markets). We do not print an earn rate.
We do not scrape a dozen blogs and average their “20–40% off” claims into a number we publish as fact. We do not mystery-shop every Tuesday. We do not invent coupons, star scores, or first-person trip reports.
